Over the August long weekend, we decided to head a little farther away from town. We researched and planned a 3 day trip along the NWT Parks waterfalls route that runs along Highway 1. On Friday night, we headed out on the 5 hour drive to Twin Falls Gorge Territorial Park, just south of Enterprise. The weather was a mix of sun and rain on the drive out after work.

We have been wondering about the territorial park campgrounds in the NWT and with a forecasted nice weekend, we decided to check one out. When we were researching the park (and other parks in the NWT), we noticed a severe lack of information compared to parks in other provinces. We’ve decided that we would try and provide a bit of a review of parks we visit for anyone looking to explore the NWT parks system.

You might be wondering what Canada Day is like in the north? Or not. Regardless, we are going to share our Canada Day festivities with you. First, we hit up the Yellowknife Canada Day parade hosted by the Rotary Club. You have to love the small town vibe that brings about Canada Day parades. They really do tend to only happen in smaller towns, right? Surprisingly, we were quite impressed with the length of the parade and the number of people decked out in red and white that came out for it.

We finally had a “free” weekend with nice weather forecasted and minimal smoke, so this past weekend we headed out for some much needed camping. Living in the NWT in the summer has just made us itch to get out with our canoe and explore some of the backcountry (hello, free camping!). And we finally have all of our camping gear and canoe in the north! We have had lots of visitors since we moved up our stuff, a smoke-filled weekend, a forecasted rainy weekend, and other projects that had limited our camping attempts to date.

Justin was ‘just in’ Yellowknife! After returning from the airport to drop off Rashaad’s family, we quickly got to cleaning up the condo and doing laundry as our next guest, Justin, was set to arrive the next day! We headed back to the airport on Sunday to pick him up. He was very excited to arrive in Yellowknife, having been to the north before (Whitehorse and Inuvik) but never to Yellowknife!

We are back with another post about our visitor-filled month! Three days after Theresa left, we found ourselves back at the ever-familiar Yellowknife Airport to pick up Rashaad’s family. His parents and niece (who you may remember visited us back in March - yes, she got to visit in both winter and summer! How lucky!) made the journey up for one week to see the sights and visit with us.

We moved out of our sublet (which we moved back into a month later - don’t ask!), Vanessa was away for 10 days (Mississauga - Guelph - Shefford - Montreal), and we have been planning, planning, planning! Wedding plans, of course, but also planning the big move to Yellowknife.

Well, here it is. The big update on our moving adventures. We have finally had time to unpack, settle in, and let our anger subside that we are (somewhat) laughing while writing this blog post. As mentioned in our previous post , we flew down to Toronto at the end of May and did some errands and packed up everything we owned into a 26’ U-Haul truck and headed back out on the road to Yellowknife.

The end of March brings the Long John Jamboree to Yellowknife Bay. This is a big event for the city - the town literally shuts down on Friday at noon to start the celebrations. It’s an all-weekend family festival with music, games, and winter activities. After a half day of work, we decided to go check out the opening day festivities. We arrived just in time to see the Championship Dog Derby start.

Last week we had our very first real visitors to our new home in Yellowknife! Rashaad’s sister and niece were on March Break and decided to spend their precious vacation days with us in a snowy, cold clime. They were welcomed to Yellowknife by the iconic polar bear in the airport. We were very happy to see them! Chloe was most happy for their arrival because she would finally be reunited with all of her precious toys and treats from home!
